Welcome to Church School at ACC!

Our family programs present opportunities for children to learn more about God, and grow their Christian faith through interaction with caring, volunteer teachers and engaging activities selected to make faith real and a part of everyday family life. If you have any questions or want to help out with our programs, feel free to contact our Director of Children and Family Ministries, Janet Brown.

2015-2016 School Teachers

It takes many people to keep our Church School running!

Many thanks to the individuals who have made the commitment for this Church School year and for being the hands and feet of the Gospel!

Registration and Attendance – Registration forms will be completed at the beginning of our Church School Session, or as new students join the group. Registration is updated annually, and attendance is taken each week. At the end of the school year, Attendance Awards will be presented.

Structure - Children begin each week in the sanctuary with the congregation. They will be dismissed to their age appropriate classes, which meet downstairs at approximately 10:15. Family communion will be served through the year to the children.

Visitors – Children who are visiting may attend the class of their friend or relative. Visitors attending more than 3x per quarter are expected to attend the class appropriate for their age group. Please note: requests to place a student in a class different from age must be discussed with the Director of Children & Family Ministries.

Curriculum - This year, we are using The Grow, Proclaim and Serve curriculum. Children will learn to grow, proclaim and serve through music, art, theater, dance, laughter, sign language, discussion, imagination, entertainment, sight, sound, hands on activities, games, crafts, Bible stories, worship, prayer and more. We look forward to seeing how your child grows as a child of God, taking what they learn in Church school into everyday life.

Behavior Expectations –It is our belief that everyone will grow in their faith when both volunteers and children exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit when attending any ACC activities. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” –Galatians 5:22

In accordance with this, we expect that children will:
1. Be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.
2. Be respectful to themselves, others and property.
3. Be safe and responsible.

In the event that a child is having difficulty, the following steps will be taken:
1. A positive verbal reminder will be given to encourage the child to make a different choice.
2. If the behavioral issue continues, the child will take a break from the activity, and the Director of Children & Family Ministries may talk with the child to support them in making a better choice.
3. If the behavior is not resolved, the child will be taken to join his/her parent.

Please discourage your child from bringing personal toys to Church School and expect to be informed about your child’s positive and negative experiences in Church School. We want to help you and your child work through issues in a loving, Christ-centered way, ensuring that each child’s experience in Church School is a positive and safe one.

Safety & Security - In accordance with Safe Church Guidelines, all volunteers will have a CORI check prior to beginning their service. Volunteers will wear nametags, and we will make every effort to ensure that there are 2 adults present in each Church School class. As families enter the church, parents are asked to sign their child in for Church School in the Narthex for the day. This attendance will be double checked downstairs at the beginning of Church School. At the conclusion of the service, all children must be met downstairs by a parent/caregiver. This will enable parents to interact with their child’s Church School teacher, and learn about the activities and lessons of the day. In the event of a fire, all children will be brought out of the church as a group, using the closest exit, as noted on posted maps. During a medical emergency, parents will be notified immediately. Volunteers and Director of Children & Family Ministries will provide basic first aid as needed, and an injury report completed and provided to parents that same day.

Health & Hygiene – Please encourage your child to use the restroom before the service begins. Children in the youngest group will be accompanied by a female volunteer to the restroom, who will wait outside, assisting only as requested. Older children may use the restroom accompanied by another child. If your child is exhibiting any of the following symptoms (temperature above 100.4; unidentified rash; nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; red, draining eyes; symptoms of infection), please do not allow your child to participate in Church School or other ACC special events. In case of injury, the parents will be notified as soon as possible and presented with a written injury report. Please note that volunteers will not administer medication of any kind. Feel free to discuss any health or safety concerns with the Director of Family & Children Ministries. Help us make sure each child stays healthy and safe!

Parent Involvement/Volunteer Opportunities – Just as in all other areas of our fellowship, our children’s programming is not possible without your active participation! We hope that all participating families provide support in at least one way throughout the course of the year. There are many options, from acting as a Church School Teacher, serving in the nursery, helping prepare and plan special events and family nights, being on call as a substitute teacher, volunteering to help during Playgroup, or helping out at Vacation Bible School. As our Children & Family Ministries continue to grow more opportunities will arise. Please consider how your gifts can best be put to use within our Church School. Your help and support is appreciated!

We have an open door policy and invite you to join our children in Church School as they learn to Live B.I.G.!
